Summary

A Reddit user announced plans to set up a Home Assistant server on a free Dell Optiplex Micro (Core i5, 32GB RAM, 256GB SSD) to unify their many smart devices, including Lutron dimmers and fan switches, Philips Hue bulbs, GE Cync lights, two Aqara G100 cameras, an August front door lock, VeSync appliances, Alexa and Sonos speakers, Govee sensors, and an Eve motion sensor. They also want the machine to host additional services such as a Plex server and Pi-hole or AdGuard, the latter of which currently runs on a Raspberry Pi 4, alongside an existing Nvidia Shield and Stremio streaming setup and three Eero Pro 6E routers. ChatGPT recommended installing Proxmox and running Home Assistant OS in a VM with Plex, Pi-hole, and media services in LXC containers. The user asked the community for guidance on the best base configuration, saying they hope to start that night but don't want to get the foundational setup wrong.

Happy Saturday everyone! I’ve decided to take the plunge and setup a Home Assistant server. I got a Dell Optiplex Micro with a core i5, 32GB, 256gb SSD for free :) Figured that’s a sign! Let’s dive in. I currently have Lutron dimmers and fan switches, Phillips Hue bulbs everywhere, GE Cync under cabinet lights, 2 Aqura G100 cameras, August front door lock (which I love, I don’t get the August hate!?), VeSync scale and air purifier, a couple Alexa 8”, oh duh Sonos HT in the living room and speakers throughout, a few Govee sensors and LED strips I’m not currently using, an Eve motion sensor and who knows what all I’m forgetting! I think it’s time to really start utilizing this stuff more cohesively. Thus the HA push. Here’s my current sticking point. I currently have a good streaming setup through Nvidia Shield and Stremio. I used to be a big Plex user, usenet with Sonarr and Radar, etc… I think I want to setup a Plex server as well. I also have a Raspberry Pi 4 running Pi-hole. 3 Eero Pro 6E for wireless. What’s the best way to go about setting up this Dell Optiplex for primarily Home Assistant but also Plex, Pi-Hole or AdGaurd, and god knows whatever other server type project pops up! How should I start? ChatGPT says Proxmox. Then have Home Assistant VM running Home Assistant OS, Plex LXC, Pi-Hole LXC and maybe a media LXC. I want to tackle this tonight. But I don’t want to rush into it and get the base setup wrong. Can the HA gurus lurking here, well anyone, help me with some guidance on how to begin my newest smart home addiction?
