Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy’s Post-Credits Scene, Explained

Summary

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Asobo Studio's spin-off starring Sophia from 2022's Requiem, takes place 15 years before 2019's A Plague Tale: Innocence, but its post-credits scene reveals the entire game was a story Sophia was recounting to Amicia de Rune, the protagonist of Innocence and Requiem. Amicia's haircut and fresh scar place the scene near the end of Requiem, just before that game's epilogue in which Amicia and Sophia prepare to journey to find the next plague carrier following Hugo's death, setting up a direct sequel to Requiem. Requiem's own post-credits scene showed a baby infected with the Macula plague accompanied by hospital-like audio, and since lore establishes that the Macula emerges in a new carrier roughly every 800 years, that teaser suggests a future game could be set around 2150. The Resonance scene also teases potential additional Sophia spin-offs, as Amicia asks how Sophia met Arnaud—an event Requiem only vaguely hints at—and Sophia has 15 more years of untold adventures before the events of Innocence.

Part of what makes Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy appealing is its stand-alone story. While Asobo Studio's new spin-off game stars Sophia, a character introduced in 2022's Requiem, the narrative is set years before that game and bears little connection to it. Unraveling Sophia's origins in an entirely new story, accompanied by a focus on action combat, makes for a perfect entry for newcomers who have no familiarity with past Plague Tale games. While this could easily be a one-and-done experience, a post-credits scene changes how important Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is to the series' future.

Spoilers ahead for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

The entirety of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy takes place 15 years before the events of 2019's Plague Tale: Innocence. When the credits finish rolling, however, we find out that the entire game has taken place within a narrative frame. Sophia has been recounting the events of the game to an audience of one. That person is none other than Amicia de Rune, the protagonist of Innocence and Requiem.

What *Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy*'s post-credits scene tells us about a third mainline game

Amicia's appearance immediately tells us that the post-credits scene takes place at some point during the events of *Requiem*. Her haircut and fresh scar narrow down the time even further, to right at the end of that game. *Requiem*'s final chapter has a short time jump that takes place after *Resonance*'s post-credits scene (as Amicia's scar is now healed). It shows her and Sophia preparing to leave on a journey to find the next carrier of the plague following the death of the previous person who bore that title: Amicia's brother Hugo. This sets up a direct sequel to *Requiem*.

Requiem, like Resonance, had a post-credits scene of its own. The short teaser showed a baby infected with the Macula, the game's plague. Audio cues that sound like hospital devices suggest the scene jumps centuries in the future to a modern-day setting. As in-game lore reveals that the Macula appears in a new carrier roughly every 800 years, that would suggest the scene occurs in about 2150. A game set after Requiem could bring the series to our near-future.

How *Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy*'s post-credits scene teases more Sophia spin-off games

The post-credits scene isn't just about Amicia or the future. At the end of their conversation, Amicia asks Sophia how she met Arnaud, another character from *Requiem*. Sophia tells her that it is a long story. *Requiem* only vaguely gestures at Sophia and Arnaud's first meeting, making it the perfect event to base another potential spin-off around.

At the end of Resonance, Sophia still has 15 years until the events of Innocence. That is a lot of time in which plenty of swashbuckling adventures could play out. Sophia is a fascinating character and watching her become the smuggler we know in Requiem would be the perfect arc for a series of games. Whatever Asobo has planned for the future of Plague Tale, there are several exciting directions the series could go next.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is now available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
